United Kingdom

Despite a tough external trading environment, the business recorded growth across its core financial services sector in 2009 from both retail and wholesale products and good customer retention. There has been a significant focus on new growth by diversification in Packaged Services. Our dedicated division has been set up to develop innovative packaged accounts allowing customers to choose the services most relevant to them. 2009 was also significant in that we launched a new joint venture with Spanish insurer, Mapfre Asistencia, to create Home 3, a new and differentiated home-assistance service. Looking to break into new markets sectors, product innovation continued throughout the year, most notably in travel where we launched a suite of travel assistance services. Complementing in-house development we also acquired The Leapfrog Group Ltd (Leapfrog) a global provider of loyalty, sales promotion and reward programmes. The acquisition importantly gives us control of Airport Angel and access to a network of airport lounges across the world that will strengthen our travel sector offering, but also complement our packaged accounts division. 2009 was also the year that we expanded our card activation and safe receipt channel across both credit and debit cards.

As an established identity fraud protection provider in the US and UK, CPP France can draw on our Group expertise in this market to launch this product. In 2009 part of the preparatory work was undertaken and we are speaking to Business Partners about this product. Elsewhere our relationships with existing partners such as Cetelem continue to drive revenue, helped by our commitment to customer service, retention initiatives and renewal income.

Germany

In Germany we were pleased to work with three new business partners in 2009. Contracts with IKANO/IKEA Bank, KQB and Dresdner Cetelem were signed and have generated revenue for the business. Changing legislation in Germany saw outbound telemarketing become more difficult, but we responded quickly by implementing inbound campaigns with a number of business partners, the first of which was a safe receipt campaign with Dresdner Cetelem. By diversifying into new channels we aim to become a multi-channel marketing services business and we are already offering, in addition, to safe receipt campaigns, balance transfer services with partners including Dresdner, Barclaycard and Santander. In addition to accessing new sales channels, we have seen an extension of our core product portfolio with product and premium upgrades, but also investigating a new Identity Protection product and Packaged Services capabilities. Our new in-house telemarketing operation in Hamburg saw us increase the number of customer service and sales advisors and is delivering a good customer experience. Customer engagement with our products is helping to drive renewal income.

India

Since the official launch of CPP to the Indian consumer in December 2008, CPP has signed contracts with eight business partners who are all significant players in the Indian credit and debit card market. CPP’s Card Protection product has been implemented across multiple sales channels, including outbound and inbound telemarketing, e-commerce, branch and positive option. The strong policy acquisition achieved in 2009 and the sustainable channels that have been developed will act as a strong foundation for continued growth in 2010. By putting the customer at the heart of everything we do, we have been able to achieve good card registration rates demonstrating customer engagement with the card protection product, which indicates positive renewal rate performance. Our existing business partners are developing sales channels in their debit card businesses and CPP is in discussion with a number of debit card providers.

Ireland

We have steadily grown the Irish business via a combination of product and price enhancements, new product development and new business partner wins. Specifically we won a contract to provide mobile phone insurance with Meteor, the third largest mobile phone operator in Ireland, who will also market our Phonesafe insurance product to the corporate and SME market sectors. 2009 was the year we launched Identity Protection and Santander became a business partner. We also successfully migrated many of our Card Protection customers onto the latest product upgrade that gives customers additional functionality and protection against payment fraud and we have good renewal rates. Recognising the need to access partner distribution channels we have introduced e-commerce functionality, which strengthens acquisition channels in-branch and at our partners own contact centres – currently the majority of new policy acquisition is through our business partners’ own sales and service channels.

Italy

During 2009 our Legal Protection product performed well with partners like Fiditalia and Barclays. Working alongside our business partners like Fiditalia Findomestic, we have been able to provide a managed outsourced solution, incorporating retention marketing support and increased telemarketing activity. Encouragingly we have worked in partnership with new business partners including Banca Popolare dell’ Emilia Romangna Group, Creditis – Cassa Risparmino Genova Group, Banca Valsabina and Banca Popolare del Cividale to implement new acquisition and marketing channels. Building on the introduction of mobile phone insurance in 2008, we have launched our Fonesafe insurance product with Samsung both as a wholesale and retail product. As part of a strategy to implement product and premium enhancements to our core Card Protection product, we have launched a card variant, CPP Value, to existing partners such Findamestic and Barclays.

Malaysia

In 2009, we forged a partnership with Maybank, the largest retail bank and top card issuer in the market. Together this our existing Business Partner relationships we now have increased access to the country’s card base to promote Card Protection. These partnerships are been optimised by multiple channel distribution utilising online, paper, inbound cross-selling and outbound telemarketing. The channel optimisation strategy also sees us train Business Partner contact centre agents and introduce incentive campaigns to maintain and grow sales activity. We have also started to explore Business Partner relationships outside the financial services sector and now work with a key loyalty programme supplier – the success of this relationship shows the viability and opportunity of moving beyond our core financial services sector with our core products and services.

Mexico

In June 2009 CPP launched its latest international operation in Mexico. Close collaboration across the Group and involving teams from across Spain, the UK and Mexico meant the Central American business was up and running in a short period of time with quick penetration of the financial services sector. The Mexican operation launched with global partners, HSBC, selling Card Protection via our inbound card activation channel. Since then the Mexican business has added the prestigious name of IXE Tarjetas with both outbound and inbound acquisition channels. The team is also building relationships with other major business partners including BBVA. With a large credit and debit card market and business partners including HSBC and IXE Grupo Financiero we are encouraged by our entry into the Mexican market.

Portugal

2009 saw a number of positive developments for our Portuguese business. Not only did we commence activity with one of the biggest banks in the country, Santander Totta, we also launched with an inbound card activation programme important to their card issuance programme as a trusted partner of outsourced marketing services. Two other major deals were also reached with major financial services organisations, BES and CGD to distribute Card Protection. In line with our other Southern European businesses, we have also introduced enhanced variants of Card Protection including Premier and Plus that will help improve average premiums and renewal performance.

Singapore

In addition to our Card Protection product, we have now launched Identity Protection as another core product in Singapore. Both core products have been well received and continue to generate incremental revenue for our Business Partners as well as customer engagement. Two partnerships have been secured with major banks, UOB and OCBC, which marks an important milestone for CPP in Asia. UOB is the largest card issuing bank in Singapore while OCBC is another leading bank. As a result, we now have increased access to the credit card market providing us with future opportunities. We have also increased the number of certified contact centre agents selling our products to help Business Partners distribution. In addition to agent training, we have also supported their accreditation and helped facilitate ongoing performance management programmes.

Spain

2009 saw Spain sign new business partner contracts with Banco Sabadell and Caixa Terrasa. Spain also worked hard to strengthen acquisition channels, specifically, its Key Line inbound channels, to drive call volumes and cross sell opportunities with partners such as Santander Group (Banesto and Santander) and Carrefour. New product development also saw the business launch a new product, Gadget Protection that protects customers’ PCs and USB modems in today’s increasingly technology-driven society. New variants of Card and Legal Protection have also been launched helping average policy premiums and renewal income. 2009 has also seen existing relationships renewed with long-term partners such as Caja de Madrid, Banco Popular and BBVA. Despite high unemployment, our renewal rates have stayed stable with many of our customers keeping their policies on renewal showing that in times of crisis, customers value the protection and security our products provide.

Turkey

In 2009 we signed two new major new business partners, Akbank and Anadolu Sigorta. This builds on the existing commercial relationships we already have with other major financial organisations including DenizBank and Bank Asya. Currently the Turkish business is working with a number of Business Partners to sell Card Protection via a number of acquisition channels – these Business Partners include Akbank, Denizbank, Bankasya and Anadolu. Telemarketing performance has been good in 2009 with conversion levels above expectation. In 2010 we will look at new acquisition channels such as positive option, safe receipt, card activation, direct sales and e-commerce.

United States

New Business Partner relationships in 2009 were secured by delivering tangible and mass-market products that addressed real consumer needs. In total, four new Business Partner relationships show that our collaborative and flexible approach to business is wining new advocates. Our continued focus on customer service and retention marketing strategies has helped drive growth alongside a desire and ability to integrate ourselves with our partners operations via training, infrastructure and processes. The new retail opportunities include a deal to supply LifeStylePerks to the Boston Apparel Group, who operate several catalogue brands and also with Big M Inc, an East Coast retail group to provide LifeStylePerks at point-of-sale as an enrolment incentive for their private label cards. CPP also signed two new Business Partners in our core financial services sector including Wachovia Bank and Sovereign Bank; the latter saw us implement a live debit card activation and cross-sell – a first for CPP in North America. Together Wachovia and Sovereign Bank have contributed to new revenue and helped our membership base grow.

Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, we deploy a multi-channel distribution strategy with our Business Partners to sell Card Protection. We also work closely with our Business Partners to strengthen their inbound cross-selling capabilities via extensive contact centre agent training and ongoing coaching support. Responding to the latest trends in card fraud, we have launched an enhanced variant of Card Protection that protects people against the growing threat of card-not-present fraud. This new product variant gives our business partners confidence that their customers will be protected against the latest forms of card fraud and that they can use their payment cards with confidence.
